Due to recent aggressive bear behavior, a temporary closure is in place for overnight camping along the Appalachian Trail from Petites Gap Road to the James River Footbridge. This camping closure includes the Matts Creek Shelter and camping along the Matts Creek Trail. While backpackers are still permitted to hike through the area, all campsites and shelters are off limits for camping.
